The glass touched by the shears hardened and was free to migrate through the glass when the glass was pressed into the mold. Wherever this hardened glass ended up, it became what we now call a "straw mark". The formed glass (called a blank) was removed from the mold. Some pieces received no additional shaping after being removed from the mold and are still referred to as a "blank", but mostly the blank was re-heated to make it more pliant, then hand-shaped to final form by spinning to flatten into a plate; swinging to form a vase; flaring to form a bowl. The edge was then manipulated by ruffling, or crimped into one of three designs: pie crust, candy ribbon or 3-IN-1.
When shaping was finished, the new FENTON process of creating Iridized Glass was employed. The still-hot glass was sprayed with metallic salt solution(s) which bonded with the glass and formed a metallic "skin" that reflected various spectra of light. The chemical composition of the spray used and the thickness of application determined the hue(s) and intensity of the IRIDESCENCE unique to the CARNIVAL GLASS we're so in love with today!
