Vtg Fenton Burmese Custard Glass Elephant Hand Painted Floral Figurine. Original sticker, no chips or cracks.

Measures approximately 4" high and 4" long. Burmese is an opaque colored art glass that shades from yellow to pink. It is found in two finishes shiny/glossy or matte/satin.

It was used to produce a wide variety of dressing table accessories, tableware, and vases. Many examples are enhanced with painted decoration. Frederick Shirley of the Mt. Washington Glass developed the Burmese glass formula in 1885. Washington sent samples to President Cleveland. While on a trip to England, Shirley presented Queen Victoria with a cup and saucer. She remarked: It looks like a Burmese sunset. Thomas Webb & Sons obtained a license from Mt. Fenton reintroduced Burmese in the early 1970s. Burmese glass is made by adding uranium oxide and a tincture of gold to a white opaque glass. The uranium creates the soft yellow color. The gold introduces the pink. When a piece is reheated in the glory hole and slowly withdraw, the intensity of the piece increases. If reheated, the piece reverts back to its yellow color.
